From Minnesota:

Obama Works Twin Cities pulled off two fantastic events in partnership with the Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity group. The following is taken from a summary of the event written by Tom Hayes:

  • "Energized by their success cleaning up the Dodge Nature Center, on September 13th, 2008, the Obama Works Twin Cities group partnered with Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity to apply some elbow grease to two projects in Minneapolis...While home is ultimately about people, we often think in terms of walls, a roof, and plumbing when describing the house. Saturday a group of about a dozen intrepid volunteers set aside campaign efforts and worked, instead, under the guidance of two volunteer Master Gardeners (connected with the Hennepin County Extension Service) to perk up the landscaping for a family that had moved into their property during the summer...We dug up new areas for planting, re-worked some gardens that needed help, and added plants that the family had selected (in consultation with the Master Gardeners) which were donated by Bailey Nursery."

...[O]ther Obama Works Twin Cities volunteers spent Sunday doing Mexican Independence Day parade clean-up, (and probably some voter registration as time allowed.)

From York, PA:

The Obama Works group in York, PA got rained out on the Day of Service. But that didn't stop them for long. Last weekend, they did some great work at a local garden. This from our local Obama Works member Laura Jensen:

"Mike Martin was homeless earlier this year when he discovered a vacant overgrown lot in downtown York, and petitioned the city for a lease to create a vegetable garden. Through his passion for gardening and hours of hard work, Mike’s “Garden of Angels” has produced over eight hundred of pounds of fruits and vegetables, from cantaloupes and watermelons, to tomatoes, peppers, spinach and okra. Mike gives away his produce for free by taking it door to door in the community.

Mike came to an Obama Works meeting this July. He is not particularly political, but had heard of about our community service efforts and was looking for some help with specific projects and ongoing maintenance of the garden. We started to send individuals to the garden to help out whenever possible, and also set up a group event for September 6th, Obama Works National Day of Service.

September 6th, unfortunately, was a total wash out. But a couple of weeks later, ten volunteers came together on a gorgeous autumn day and spent the afternoon working at the garden. We did a variety of projects including cleaning out beds that were finished for the season, building new beds, hauling many wheelbarrows of dirt to even out the terrain, weeding, mowing and picking. At the end of the afternoon, a few local children stopped by and we loaded them up with tomatoes, bell peppers and green beans to take back to their families."
